Description

I spent the last year preparing for this event.  My first ever solar eclipse.

I, like many from around the world (met folks from China, Italy, Canada, USA, New Zealand and Poland to name just a few) travelled to Learmonth and the Exmouth peninsula, Western Australia to witness and hopefully record the Hybrid Solar Eclipse of 2023. It has been an interesting journey to learn about imaging and processing different phenomena that occur around a solar eclipse.

I flew from Melbourne, Australia to Perth, then took a flight up to the Learmonth Airport (on an Airforce base, the security looked the other way allowing us to take photos). Totality was about 50 seconds at the airport. Others travelled further up the peninsula to witness about 70 seconds of totality.

For the corona picture here, I used a second hand Canon 6D with a 30 year old 500mm Tamron mirror lens with a 1.4x teleconverter giving me about 700mm of focal length at F11. I used the Set'n'c program on a USB stick computer (Eclipse Orchestrator program required a licence for the expanded capabilities and I could never get the purchasing link to work). Tracking the sun was via a Skywatcher SolarQuest. Next time (if there is a next time) I won't use the SolarQuest as its movements resulted in blurred images at anything below 1/60th of a second. So I used a higher ISO with fast shutter speeds for the partial images (processing to follow).
For the Corona, ISO 200, shutter speeds 1/1000th of a second to 0.5 of a second. Since totality was only 50 seconds so very few images could be taken before Baily Beads appeared (images to follow). With such a short totality it was a challenge.

As far as processing goes I found this to be quite difficult. It's no IOTD,  I'm at the limit of my ability here with Photoshop. if anyone would like the RAW data then just PM me and happy to see their results. The Prominences were blown out as you can see. HDR is a new thing for me I find it very challenging to process.

I need to give a shout out to Stan Honda and his eclipse video presentation on YouTube. Also the Fred Espenak's Mr Eclipse website. Fantastic advice and guidance.

There are there are thousands of images of solar eclipses, just as there are of M42 or the Horsehead nebula. They all look pretty much the same I guess. Like all of us in Astrophotography the final image is the destination. it reminds us of the  journey. On my wall at home will be this image. Taken by me.

Just a note on the Solar Eclipse Experience. My main aim was to see the eclipse and experience it. I spent many many months rehearsing taking the images and on the day it pretty much worked out as planned. I found the whole experience very emotional and is one of my top 5 highlights of this hobby. To see and here the birds freak out, the temperature drop, the horizon change, the colours of the sky and especially seeing the Corona with my own eyes will be an experience I will never forget.
